"It's like we continually choose spending money to replace the drapes in the house because there's a hole in the roof," says Charla Schafer, president of the Community Foundation of Greater Muscatine.

"We have to focus on the foundational priorities and fix the hole, and that hole is housing."

That's why Schafer's group is teaming up with a company called Alquist 3D to build 10 new homes in Muscatine County, Iowa, using 3D printing, the Quad-City Times reports.

Alquist 3D, which is based in Bettendorf, will be using its technology to print the exteriors of the new homes, which will be sold to low- and middle-income residents.

The project is part of a larger effort by Alquist 3D and Muscatine County to build more housing in the county, which has the third-highest housing costs in the state, per a press release.

The first 3D-printed home was unveiled Friday.

"Gratitude to live in a community and work with people that are impatient about making their neighbors' lives better and their community stronger, embracing collaborative solutions to address our significant priorities," Schafer says.
